BEYOND THE BOTTLE

Bisquertt

Producer

Osvaldo Bisquertt and Soledad Urrutia established their namesake winery in 1978, playing a pivotal role in the development of the Colchagua Valley. In the early 2000s, their son Sebastián took over the reins, upholding the family’s commitment to sustainability, which has been recognized by the Wines of Chile organization. Andrea Gillet, Bisquertt's Head Oenologist, leverages her extensive experience from renowned wineries around the globe to craft terroir-driven wines sourced from heritage varieties, many of which come from century-old head-trained vines.

Region

Valle del Maule, located in central Chile, is one of the country’s oldest and largest wine regions. Renowned for its diverse terroir, it stretches from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean, creating a variety of microclimates ideal for grape cultivation. The valley is particularly famous for its old-vine País, along with notable varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, and Syrah.

Grape

Planted internationally across the Old and New Worlds, Carignan is simultaneously surprisingly underrated. Long thought of as a workhorse great variety, prized for drought resistance and its general adaptability to arid and Mediterranean climates, Carignan has observed a bit of a renaissance as wine producers recognize its potential for creating structured, long-lived wines. With a wealth of old-vine Carignan found globally, the best examples exhibit crunchy, brambly red fruit flavors, dusty tannins, vibrant acidity, and a distinctive rustic spiciness.
