BEYOND THE BOTTLE

Bisquertt

Producer

Osvaldo Bisquertt and Soledad Urrutia established their namesake winery in 1978, playing a pivotal role in the development of the Colchagua Valley. In the early 2000s, their son Sebastián took over the reins, upholding the family’s commitment to sustainability, which has been recognized by the Wines of Chile organization. Andrea Gillet, Bisquertt's Head Oenologist, leverages her extensive experience from renowned wineries around the globe to craft terroir-driven wines sourced from heritage varieties, many of which come from century-old head-trained vines.

Region

Just two hours south of Santiago lies the picturesque Valle de Colchagua, a prominent wine region that extends from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean along the Tinguiririca River. Known for its diverse vineyards, the valley’s “Entre Cordilleras” zones dominate, yet ambitious winemakers are increasingly exploring hillside sites. The Mediterranean climate features hot, dry summers and cool winters, contributing to significant diurnal temperature variations that enhance grape quality.

Grape

Listán Prieto was introduced to Chile and Argentina by Spanish conquistadors in the mid-16th century, where it became known as País and Criolla Chica, respectively. Around the same time, Franciscan priests brought the grape to Mexico, naming it Misión. Over the centuries, Misión traveled north to New Mexico and, by the late 18th century, reached San Diego, laying the groundwork for the California wine industry under the anglicized name Mission. Highly versatile, País can be crafted into a variety of wine styles, and has become somewhat of a darling of the natural wine movement.
