BEYOND THE BOTTLE

Bodegas Verum

Producer

The Lopez Montero family’s roots in winemaking trace back to 1788, but it was in 2005 that María Victoria Montero and her children embarked on the Verum project, focusing on 80 hectares of exceptional vineyards in Castilla-La Mancha. Guided by winemaker Elías Lopez Montero, Verum emphasizes harmony with nature, reviving traditional varieties while exploring lesser-known grapes like Graciano. As a distinguished family-owned winery in a landscape dominated by bulk producers, Verum reflects the authentic essence of their land, family, and history.

Region

Castilla-La Mancha, a heart-shaped region nestled in central Spain, epitomizes the quintessential Spanish landscape. Its name, derived from the Moorish term “manxa,” translates to “scorched earth,” reflecting the dry, beige clay soils that characterize the area. Renowned as the setting for Cervantes’s Don Quixote, this expansive region is one of the world’s largest winegrowing areas, featuring ancient head-trained vines. Dominated by Cencibel and Airén grapes, Castilla-La Mancha is also celebrated for its production of Manchego cheese.

Grape

Spain’s most planted grape variety, Tempranillo takes the name Cencibel in the center of the country, in the regions surrounding Madrid. Its name, derived from the Spanish word temprano meaning “early,” perfectly captures its tendency to ripen ahead of other grapes. The backbone of the famous Rioja and Ribera del Duero wines, Tempranillo is planted across Iberia and recognized by its amalgam of red and black fruit flavors, gentle spiciness, and earthy leather tones.
