BEYOND THE BOTTLE

Tóth Ferenc

Producer

Tóth Ferenc - affectionately known as Uncle Feri - and his wife embarked on their winegrowing journey back in 1983. A passionate advocate for rare grape varieties like Kadarka and Leányka, Tóth Ferenc has significantly contributed to the Eger region’s viticultural landscape, earning him the prestigious Hungarian Order of Merit for his efforts in 2017. In 2005, his daughter Katalin and son-in-law Zoltán joined, enhancing the winery's legacy and championing the official recognition of Egri Csillag (the region's flagship white wine) into appellation law.

Region

Located just 90 minutes northeast of Budapest, Eger is renowned for its esteemed red wines and increasingly recognized whites from distinctive local grape varieties. Eger's winegrowing history dates back to the establishment of the diocese in 1004, and was largely influenced by immigrant groups, including the French and Walloons. The foothills of the Bükk Mountains provide ideal vineyard elevations, characterized by fertile volcanic and tuff soils, complemented by ancient caves that continue to serve modern wineries for production and aging.

Grape

Kékfrankos, an Austro-Hungarian grape variety, stands as one of the highlights of Central Europe's rich wine heritage. The passage of time has seen the grape gain numerous aliases, with Blaufränkisch being the most globally recognized. In Bulgaria, it's known as Gamé, and it has a second Hungarian name, Nagyburgundy (big Burgundy) since the variety was commonly mistaken for Gamay Noir and Pinot Noir. It comprises an important part of various Eastern European red blends, including Hungary’s Egri Bikavér (aka "Bull's Blood").
